Many people use LAN, or local area network, technology. A token ring is a type of this technology. With token ring LAN technology, there is a three byte frame that travels around the ring. This special frame is called the token. When someone has the token possession, they are allowed to transmit information over the network, through the medium. This information will travel completely around the entire network, in a loop.

Frequently with token ring networks, there are multiple ring stations. The information that is being transmitted will end up going from one station to the next. At each station, it will circulate through the ring that that station is set up on. Usually, these token ring local area networks are set up to look like a star.

Today, token ring local area networks are not used as frequently as they once were. In the past, the 4 Mbits/s were said by some to be even better than an Ethernet connection. These claims were argued by many, but it was never conclusively decided one way or another. Currently, token ring local area network speeds are available not only in 4 Mbit/s, but also in 16 Mbit/s, and even 100 Mbit/s. There is the existence of 1000 Mbit/s, which was approved in 2001, but unfortunately, there were never any products marketed with this speed.

Each station in a token ring local area network is either a standby monitor or an active monitor. Only one active monitor is allowed on any particular ring, at any particular time. Toyota, fresh off a major recall of 2.3 million of its vehicles for accelerator pedal problems, has released its new concept car. The car is known as the Toyota FT-CH (Future Toyota Compact Hybrid) and was manufactured by the Toyota European Design and Development team, which is based in Sophia-Antipolis. The vehicle fits into Toyota’s Prius family and will be the smallest, cheapest, and lightest model in the Prius family. The vehicle was released to the public only a couple of weeks ago at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. The latest hybrid release from Toyota is just one in a line of hybrid vehicles produced by the company in the hopes of reducing vehicle emissions and perfecting the hybrid technology.

The FT-CH is considered the younger brother of the Prius III. It measures just 3.88m long, 1.74m wide, and 1.40m high. Toyota, at the Detroit Auto Show, did not announce whether or not this vehicle would head to showrooms of Toyota dealerships across the country anytime soon but they did hint at the idea. If this vehicle hits the showroom then it will be marketed to a younger buyer because it is smaller than the Prius III and will be priced below the Prius III as well.

The FT-CH from Toyota would not be a plug-in vehicle like the Prius III or the Chevrolet Volt, which costs consumers around $30,000. The FT-CH from Toyota would run consumers around $22,000 and maybe even less depending on the version of the vehicle purchased and the features included. The vehicle has a very sleek design all the way around, including the interior, and has room for four people to travel in the vehicle. The new concept car offers drivers the ultimate technological experience when on the roads, of which can help keep the driver safe.

Ford, one of the most popular automakers in the United States, and Google, one of the most popular search engines and technological companies in the world, are talking about a pact that would create a union between the two companies. Ford is looking into the possibility of having Google integrate some of its technologies into new Ford vehicles being released to the public in the near future. Ford is not only working on a pact with Google but they have also announced agreements with social media outlet Twitter, audio news service Stitcher, map supplier MapQuest and internet radio provider Pandora.

Many experts within the industry believe that Ford is looking to combine some of the features from the Google Android Mobile platform and the Ford technology known as Sync. Sync has become popular with Ford motorists because it allows the operators of the vehicles to access applications on their smart phones through the touch screens and console screens in the vehicles via their voice. If this deal goes through for both Ford and Google, this would be considered open technology, which is used by Apple and its iPhone brand. Third parties would be allowed to create applications for use through Google on Ford vehicles and the automaker would get a cut of the money generated from the application.

Ford has released all of this information and their newest update to their Sync program, known as MyFord Touch, in the wake of more states banning texting while driving beginning on the first of the year. This program allows the operator of the vehicle to change the vehicle temperature, radio stations, CD tracks and other vehicle functions through their voice as a way to reduce driver distractions. The Ford company plans to make MyFord Touch standard on 80 percent of its vehicles over the next five years.

A token ring network is a type of Local Area Network (LAN) that is used to connect computers, allowing them to communicate. To better understand how a token ring works, you must understand what a LAN is. LANs typically consist of small areas such as a house or office. This network connects all the computers and other devices, such as wireless laptops or printers, together.

A token ring network works by passing a token, or a specific bit pattern, around in a circle of computers.  Picture, for example, groups of people sitting in circles at poker tables. These people are like the computers. Computers send information and messages through the token by attaching information to it and passing it around to other networked computers.

Token rings follow a special set of standards set forth by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) called IEEE 802.5.

When linked together using Token Ring technology, the MSAUs use tokens, which serve to start and carry on the linking process in order to assure that all MSAUs have access to a company’s network. That is a simple explanation, and is not intended to be considered a complete description of how a Token Ring works.

No matter how it actually works, a Token Ring, as well as an IEEE 802.5, allows companies that offer specific products or services, such as pet insurance, to supply network connections and access among employees and others who need to utilize the company’s computer system. Both the Token Ring and IEEE 802.5 formats are responsible for maintaining the link between the network and MSAUs that are connected to it.

Using Token Ring or IEEE 802.5 (remember, the two are basically compatible) allows for faster, yet more secure communication and interlinking between people who use the same network for computer functions. Data can be transmitted between stations in an orderly manner that allows for continuous information flow. Employees are able to work in a more efficient manner, which can mean increased business for the company.

Token ring is a local area network that lives inside something called the data link layer. It uses a three byte frame called a token that travels around the ring. The ring frame travels completely around the loop. Now what does this mean to you? When the token ring was first available in 1985 it didn’t move very fast, at just 4 megabits per second. But in 1989, it was moved up to 16 megabits and the 802.5 standard came about to support this.

The token ring, however, stopped being fashionable once the Ethernet was invented. The Ethernet was much faster and many businesses who put speed of information at a premium began to move toward this new and improved technology. The token ring did make a comeback as the Ethernet allowed prices of the token ring to fall so low that it became a cost cutting measure for companies to choose it instead. The days are numbered for the token ring now, but it was once an important piece of technology.
